Directorate of Physical Planning

About Engineering And Surveying Services Division

The Division has been in existence since 2001 after De-Merging the Department of Physical Planning from the Department of Works and Services. The division have 4 different unit and they are:

Electrical Engineering Unit

The electrical engineering unit of the physical planning directorate oversees the design, implementation, and maintenance of the electrical infrastructure and systems across the university. The unit ensures that the electrical needs of all the university facilities are met safely, efficiently, and sustainably. Here are the key responsibilities:

  • Designing and planning electrical systems for new buildings and renovations, including power distribution, lighting, and communication systems. Ensuring design comply with local codes, standards, and best practices.
  • Overseeing electrical engineering aspects of construction and renovation projects. Coordinating with architects, contractors, and other engineering disciplines. Managing budgets, schedules, and resources related to electrical work.
  • Ensuring all electrical systems and installations comply with safety regulations and standards. Conducting regular inspections and risk assessments to prevent hazards.
  • Working with university administration, faculty, and other stakeholders to understand and address their electrical needs. Providing technical expertise and support for research projects that require specialized electrical infrastructure.
  • Maintaining detail records of electrical systems, including as built drawings, maintenance logs, and inspection reports. Reporting the status of electrical systems and projects to university leadership.
  • Providing training for maintenance staff and others involved in the operation of the electrical systems. Keeping up to date with the latest advancements in electrical engineering to incorporate best practices into the university’s infrastructure.

Civil Engineering Unit

The role of the civil engineering unit of the physical planning directorate is to manage and oversee the design, construction, and maintenance of the university’s physical infrastructure. This unit ensures the built environment supports the institution’s academic, research and community service missions. Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing master plans for the university development, including new buildings, roads, walkways, and landscaping. Designing civil engineering aspects of construction projects, such as foundations, structural systems, water supply, drainage, and waste management systems. Ensuring compliance with local codes, regulations, and sustainability standards.
  • Leading and coordinating construction and renovation projects from conception to completion. Collaborating with architects, contractors, electrical engineers, and other stakeholders. Managing project budgets, schedules, and resources to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Developing and implementing maintenance plans for existing infrastructure to ensure longevity and functionality. Upgrading facilities to meet modern standards and improve safety, accessibility, and efficiency.
  • Ensuring all civil engineering works comply with safety regulations and standards. Conducting regular inspections and risk assessments to identify and mitigate potential hazards. Implementing safety protocols during construction and maintenance activities
  • Overseeing the operation and maintenance of essential services, such as water supply, sewage, and waste disposal systems. Managing the campus road network, parking facilities, and pedestrian pathways.

Mechanical Engineering Unit

The role of the directorate of physical planning mechanical engineering unit within the university involves the planning, design, installation, and maintenance of mechanical systems that support the university’s infrastructure. This unit ensures that mechanical systems are efficient, safe, and sustainable aligning with the university’s operational needs. Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing mechanical systems for new buildings and renovations. Developing specifications and ensuring designs meet local codes, regulations, and best practices.
  • Managing mechanical engineering aspects of construction and renovation projects. Coordinating with architects, civil engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders. Overseeing project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful completion.
  • Implementing maintenance programs for existing mechanical systems to ensure they operate efficiently and reliably. Upgrading outdated systems to improve performance, safety, and energy efficiency.

Surveying and Geoinformatics Unit

The role of the physical planning surveying and geoinformatics unit in the university involves managing and applying geospatial data and surveying techniques to support the planning, development, and maintenance of the university’s infrastructure. The unit ensures that all university projects are based on accurate and up to date spatial data. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting topographical and cadastral surveys to create detailed maps of the university. Providing accurate measurements and spatial data for construction and renovation projects.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and maintaining geospatial data related to the university environment. Managing geographic information systems to store and analyze spatial data.
  • Providing surveying and geographic expertise to support the planning and design of new buildings, roads, utilities, and other infrastructure projects. Ensuring that spatial data is integrated into the planning and design processes to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
  • Overseeing surveying aspects of construction and renovation projects. Coordinating with architects, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to ensure that projects are based on accurate spatial data. Monitoring project progress and verifying that construction is in accordance with design specifications.
  • Managing land use planning and allocation within the university. Ensuring that land boundaries and property records are accurately maintained and updated.
  • Creating maps, charts, and other visualizations to communicate spatial data and project plans to the university leadership and stakeholders. Producing reports on surveying and geospatial data to support decision making processes.

There is no Staff in the Division for now.
